PHD Degree Course in Theology : Prospectus

  1. Introduction:
    Darshan College and Research Institute (DCRIB) is a “facilitation centre” of RAI UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL registered at Delaware, USA.

    The Degrees awarded by the University are recognized internationally. In India the degree is not recognized by the University Grant Commission.

    DCRIB has a well qualified and experienced staff to promote research in Theology. Students who are eligible can register for PH.D Course and do their research with us and get international degree.

  2. Eligibility for Ph.D. Degree Course

    • M.A. Degree from any recognized University of India in any of the World Religions with a minimum of 50 % of marks in the aggregate.

    • Licentiate in Theology or Philosophy from any Foreign University with a minimum of 80% of marks in the aggregate.

    • M.A. degree Course in Sanskrit or Philosophy from any recognized University of the world with a minimum of 50% marks in the Aggregate.

    • M.A. Degree in Theology from any American University with a minimum of 80% marks.

    • M.Th. (Master of Theology) or M.Ph. (Master of Philosophy) from any Post Graduate Institute of Theology in India with a minimum of 60% of marks in the aggregate.

    • M.A. in any subject with 55% of marks and three years of experience in teaching or research.

  3. Provisional Registration

    • The eligible candidates should meet the Research Director for counseling and choose an area of research and also a Guide in consultation with him. They can send their application for provisional registration at any time during the year..

    • The candidate then writes consecutively two scientific papers of around 4000 words each and conduct two colloquiums on the papers submitted. The papers are to be approved and evaluated by the Guide before the colloquium. The colloquium will be evaluated by the Guide and another two staff members of the Institute.

    • The candidates who get 50% marks on both the papers and the colloquiums, are allowed to choose a theme and formulate the title of the thesis in consultation with the Guide. They should then make an extensive list of Bibliography and prepare a provisional synopsis of the theme (minimum of 2000 words), which should describe succinctly the title of the thesis, methodology, goal of research and what contribution the thesis can make to the science of theology and to the welfare of humanity.

    • Minimum Duration to fulfill above requirements is six months. After two years the registration expires and the student has to register again if he wants to continue his research

  4. Definitive Registration.

    • Once the candidate successfully goes through the above procedures, he can register for research definitively. The application for Definitive Registration should be submitted to the Research Office in the month of January or June each year along with three copies of the provisional synopsis and three copies of the Bibliography.

    • A progress report is to be submitted by every candidate in the months of December and May each year, which is to be submitted by the guide to the Research Council. The Report should explain the following (1) new literature investigated, (2) new insights and new data obtained. (3) abstract of the text of the thesis actually completed during the period.

    • The candidate should get approval of the Guide for each chapter of his thesis.

    • After four reports, the candidate is free to submit his thesis. The thesis can also be submitted along with the fourth report. The Thesis has to be submitted in five sets along with five sets of the “abstract of the thesis” consisting of minimum five hundred words. The time for submitting the thesis is either January or June each year.

    • The thesis will be examined by three examiners, namely, the Guide, an internal examiner and an external examiner who are to be nominated by the Research Council. The Internal examiner will be one of the staff of the Research Council and the external examiner will be an expert in the subject from any part of the world.

    • If the examiners approve the thesis (they should award at least 50% of marks allotted to it), the candidate is allowed to defend it in public. The public defense is evaluated by the same examiners, in case of the absence of any, the Research Director is authorized to appoint a substitute. The Rai University International shall depute at least one representative for the defense. The entire department and also some invited guests can witness the defense. The candidate is allowed to present his theme for 30 minutes then the examiners and the audience are free to question the candidate. The defense shall last at least for an hour.

    • The final evaluation of the thesis is done as follows: 70% for the thesis, and 30% for the defense. Immediately after the defense the Research Director shall meet along with the examiners in order to determine the Grade and to communicate the same to the candidate. In extra-ordinary cases the awarding the grades can be postponed. The Grades will be the following: 80-100% - Excellent; 70- 80% Very Good; 60-70% Good: 50-60% Satisfactory. The Award of PhD Degree certificate will be done by the Rai University International in due time.

    • There could be a maximum of one year’s duration between the submission of the thesis and the defense. The duration could be extended in the case the examiners advise to rewrite the entire thesis or a portion of it.

    • The candidate should submit the Thesis within three years after the Definitive Registration. In case of delay, the candidate should apply for extension, which, if granted will last for maximum of two more years. If the candidate fails to apply for extension before the expiry date and still desires to continue, s/he should re-register with the RUI.

  5. Research Council
    The Research Council shall meet twice in a year in the months of March and September to arrive at following decisions:

    • To receive the applications for Provisional Registration.

    • To receive the applications for Definitive Registration and to approve the Theme and the Provisional Synopsis. The Institute normally does not encourage research on apologetic themes.

    • To propose to the University Names of Professors who are eligible to Guide Students for research (maximum of six candidates under one guide). To receive the thesis and to Nominate the Examiners for Defense.

    • To evaluate the progress of the students and arrive at appropriate decisions if there are any problems (to cancel registration if there is no progress). The candidate is given one warning if he does not provide two consecutive reports. If he fails to respond for a month, his registration remains cancelled.

    • To plan and organize all activities of the Darshan Research Institute, especially the public defense of the Ph.D. Candidates.

    • To verify the financial situation and to alter the fee structure whenever necessary.

    • To implement the directives of the Rai University International and propose means for further collaboration with it.

  6. Guides
    The Guides are appointed on the basis of their academic merit. They should have a doctorate degree and teaching experience and some publications.

    The Director shall submit a list of experts to the Research Council which approves in principle their eligibility to be a guide.

    When a particular student registers, an appropriate guide is recommended to the student. If there is mutual agreement, between the candidate and the guide proposed, the guides name will be sent to the RUI for approval by the Director.

    A Guide can have maximum of six students at a time for research.

    No regular fee or salary is paid to the guides, except the fee paid by the particular Candidate whom he guides.

    When a candidate is ready to submit the thesis, the Guide makes a list of at least five experts in the particular subject, who could be appointed as examiners and submits it to the Director to be placed before the Research Council, which is the sole authority to appoint the examiners and their substitutes.

  7. The Research Director.

    • The Research Director is responsible for the administration and academic standards of the Institute.

    • He/She shall act as liaison between the Institute and the Rai University International. He/she shall take responsibility to communicate all the activities of the Institute by sending resolutions arrived at the meetings, namely, the names of candidates provisionally as well as definitively selected, the theme of their research and names of the guides etc..

    • He/she shall send to the University the reports of all the Colloquiums, with statement of marks, and the names of the examiners.

    • He /She shall communicate to the University the dates of the Research council meetings so as to reach a week in advance. In the case of defense the date should be made known at least a fortnight in advance and get the name of the University Representative for the defense.

    • He /she shall send to the University International (DDL) a copy of the Thesis along with the abstract immediately after the submission.

  8. Fee Structure
    The Fee Structure is announced in the Brochure for each Year. Please see recent Brochure for the Fee Structure

    The Registration Fee should be paid to DDL first and the Enrollment Number from RUI has to be obtained, before making any payment to Darshan College. A Xerox copy of the DD paid to the DDL has to be enclosed, while submitting the DD to the Darshan College.
