POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING
(Self-financing Course)

Prelude for the Course
According to World Health Organisation one million people commit suicide around the world every year, and the number of those who attempt suicide is 10 to 20 times larger, making it the 13th most common cause of death. Why is it happening? If we take a peep into today’s younger generation, we can see they are confused about choosing a career; they are faced with so many problems like teen violence, substance abuse, alcohol consumption, teen pregnancy, family and parental negligence, stress and depression etc.; they are confused where to head and where to get a support from. 

Anyone at any time can develop an emotional problem. This can give rise to sadness, anger and frustration diminishing one’s capacity to function well. All this cannot be considered something passing and temporary. Such a situation demands professional treatment by trained counselors. Then there are undesired and unexpected natural calamities Tsunami, earthquakes and the like demanding rehabilitation of the victims from traumatic experiences and psychological damage and stress. 

For all these reasons, there is a need to-

  • Provide organized and scientific training in counseling with a view of shaping adequate number of professional personnel in counseling world, to meet the immediate requirement of our country.

    Taking this into consideration, Darshan College has come forth to offer a one-year Post Graduate Diploma Course on Psychological Counseling (PGDPC). This course is designed to train the students to acquire knowledge of and practice in advanced counseling skills and give awareness of the potential ethical issues involved in counseling psychology too. Through this course the learners will be given specialized training on the area of Educational and Career counseling, and enable them to be skilled in that particular area.

    PGDPC will help to ensure a supply of qualified personnel for the services in question. Through PGDPC the students are given proper training on counseling and dealing with specific issues in individual and group level. In the first semester students will gain expertise in counseling skills and different modalities of counseling. With the supervision of experienced counselors students will be working on one to one counseling and group counseling. Major focus will be on the personal and professional molding of the students to be a successful counselor. This course primarily aims at equipping students professionally with theoretical and practical exposure in specialized areas. In the second semester students will be trained on educational and career counseling. The course also got lot of room for initiating and nourishing the verbal and intellectual skills of learners through discussions, critiquing of films and counseling related videotapes and reviewing journals.

      Admission is made based on marks scored in the qualifying examinations and entrance test and personal interview conducted by the admission committee. 

      6 seats are earmarked for Professionals, sponsored by recognized institutions in the field of Counseling; 6 seats will be allocated for international students, preference will be given to applicants representing SAARC Countries.

COURSE DETAILS

  1. SPECIFIC FEATURES 
    First semester of this course intends to lay foundation for the theoretical and practical aspects of understanding psychology and counseling through experiential learning at laboratory and field. This would include (i) Acquisition of theoretical knowledge of psychological Processes, Skills and Techniques of Individual Counseling and Group Process (ii) Practical application of Individual and Group Counseling Skills and in addition, Supervised Training cum Personal and Professional Counseling for developing professional foundation.

    The second semester aims at the growth of the learners into a professional counselor. Keeping that as the purpose and focus, the syllabus is designed in such a way that the learners will be trained on psychological assessment, educational and career counseling. Added to the theory paper learners will have three practical papers too. For the successful completion of the course the learners have to submit a research paper on counseling or related issues.

    .

    1. THEORY PAPER
      Each theory paper is to be completed within the allotted 64 hours of classes. Students are encouraged to collect information from the Web and other advanced resources to prepare assignments. Students are also encouraged to make E-mail id of their own so that course materials and Abstracts of the theory papers can be sent to each student much in advance. Each theory paper carries 100 marks. There will be a mid semester exam for all the theory papers carrying twenty marks . Another twenty marks are allotted to assignments.

    2. PRACTICAL PAPERS
      There are five practical papers framed for this course. The practical classes will be conducted in the respective laboratories under the supervision of the teachers. These papers aim at enabling students to gain skills in conducting individual and group sessions, evaluating the process qualitatively and quantitatively and critiquing. Students are expected to gain on-hand experience for the practical papers from the field. Two papers are specifically designed for personal and professional development of the students. Each practical paper carries 100 marks. See ‘Academic Assessment’ chart given at the end this booklet for the distribution of marks.

      Practical sessions commence within one month from the reopening of the academic year. The students will be introduced to the Schools, Hospitals and Home for the aged etc., to conduct their practicals. Two practicals per week are obligatory. The student should meet the supervisor at least once a week and submit to him his records.

  2. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES: 

    1. PERSONAL COUNSELLING
      Candidates must undergo around 25 hours of personal counseling consistent with their core theoretical model (Person centered/ Gestalt/ cognitive –behavioral) from external supervisor or any other counselor recommended. Candidates should also have experienced the same depth and length of counseling to that which they are offering, so candidates offering longer-term work (to clients) would need to have experienced longer personal Counseling/therapy.

      Duration of each session may range between 45-120 minutes depending upon the nature of the session. This growth oriented personal counseling is compulsory for all students through out the semester. Personal counseling sessions aim at enabling students to overcome personal issues which often interfere with the practical classes and personal growth. Additional number of hours is also to be allotted for those students who feel special attention. Criteria for appointing counselors are to be decided taking into consideration of theoretical orientation of counselors and their experience in having undergone such personal counseling. Students are permitted to change the counselor if necessary after consulting with the chief Supervisor. The student has to take appointment from the counselor in advance and the date, time and duration of the visit has to be informed to the Chief supervisor.

    2. REFLECTIVE SESSIONS
      All candidates have to attend at least one reflective session ( minimum duration 90 min) in every week through group-oriented work. The objectives of this session are: to provide an opportunity for the students to reflect on the theoretical knowledge and the practical experience they acquire through their training and the reflections of personal growth oriented counseling. To learn the style of reviewing personal experiential learning and fostering personal a professional growth through group interactions; to share and exchange self- growth related aspects through group process; to enhance personalization of the experiential learning skills. Attendance is compulsory for this session.

  3. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

    1. Review Sessions:
      Review sessions aim at enabling students to review Biographical books, scientific journals, and Psychology-related films. These sessions may develop skills in creativity and constructive thinking, evaluating, and interpreting various theoretical & counseling skills related aspects.

    2. Journal Review: 
      Review three research papers related to Counseling theory, skills and techniques. The focus of the review is to be on advancement of theory, skills and technique in the field of counseling, various applications, methodology, etc. 

      .

    3. Book Review: 
      which presents the Biography and autobiography of Psychologists. The focus of the presentation is expected to be on the personal growth of the author for autobiographical books and for the biographical books the review should focus on perception of the authors and the psychologist who is presented as the main character. 

      .

    4. Film Review: 
      Focusing on the theories of personality/ Communications reflecting on the feelings a review report has to be prepared and presented.

      .

  4. CONDUCTING SEMINAR/ PRESENTATION
    Students are to be given opportunity to prepare scientific papers following the guidelines of reading and research methodology and to present the same outside the classroom and thus to enable them to develop self-confidence and improve the style of presentation; develop awareness in the application of various therapeutic -counseling techniques. Each student is expected to make a minimum of two presentations during the course outside the campus as per the directions given by the supervisor.

  5. ATTENDING SEMINAR / WORKSHOPS/ CONFERENCE/ TRAINING PROGRAMMES: 
    If the candidate is interested in attending any career/ Professional development program, she/ he can attend the same with the prior permission from the Director submitting the application on prescribed Performa and submitting the attendance certificate also. It is compulsory that all the candidates have to take part in specific academic related activities such as ATTENDING SEMINAR / WORKSHOPS/ CONFERENCE/ TRAINING PROGRAMMES. Attendance and involvements will be evaluated as part of the training programme.

  6. INVITED TRAINING
    Resource persons from counseling professions will be invited to give practical exposure to students related to various formal and non-formal counseling skills and techniques which are not included as part of the curriculum at least once a week. This would help students to learn those techniques, which are not taught as part of the course. Topics of the session will be displayed in the notice board in advance and the attendance is compulsory

  7. LIBRARY WORK: 
    Students are permitted to go for library reference works from the field whenever they are free and needed. Students have to obtain prior permission from the Supervised training in-charge and obtain attendance certificate from the librarian or get the signature of the librarian on the prescribed form stating the date, time and duration of the visit, which has to be submitted to the Supervisor in-charge.

  8. LEARNING METHODS:
    Students are expected to complement the lectures on theory papers with self study from library, Internet, and the course materials provided by the faculty. They are expected to follow the abstracts provided by the teachers. Essays prepared by each student will be submitted to the concerned professors prior to the class and the classroom facilitations will be followed for 90/120 minutes.

    The Teachers are available to supervise the counselling sessions conducted by the students. The reports are to be submitted every week and each student should spend at least one hour per week with supervisor of his counselling.

  9. ATTENDANCE
    In each semester the student has to attend not less than 75% of classes. The rule is applicable for all academic lectures, seminars, workshops, practicals and internships during each semester.

  10. MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION: 
    The medium of Instruction shall be English.

  11. SCHEME OF EXAMINATION

    1. There shall be a university examination at the end of each semester. The duration of the theory examinations and practical are 3 hours. The students are required to submit the practical records, fieldwork reports, case study reports, supervised internships records etc before the examination
      .

    2. Every theory question paper shall ordinarily consist of five questions with one question for each unit. All questions are compulsory. Each question will have sections requiring both short and long answers and will have internal choice, developed to test conceptual skills, understanding skills, comprehension skills, and articulation and application skills. 
      .

    3. There will a mid-semester exam conducted during each semester as a part of internal assessment. These carry 40 marks. For the End- Semester examination, the theory carries 40 marks and the practicals/viva 20 marks. 
      .

    4. Every practical paper will carry 100 marks of which 60 marks will be for the examination and 40 marks for record book and attendance. Preparation and submission of the practical record is compulsory. In case of practical examination, the candidates shall be assessed on the basis of (a) Knowledge for relevant processes (b) skills and operations involved (c) Results/products including calculation and reporting
      .

    5. The internal marks will be published 1 week before the examination and will be put in the notice board.
      .

    6. The practical examination will be conducted by both internal and external examiners. Nevertheless if the external examiner is absent, two internal examiners together could conduct the examination.
      .

  12. BOARD OF STUDIES AND EXAMINATION
    Board of studies and board of examination will be constituted (which shall not exceed nine members) under the directions of the Director of Darshan College. Members are selected on the basis of their experience in teaching research and practice in the field of psychological counseling. 

    1. The Board of Examiners shall be scrutinizing and approving the question papers and scheme of valuation.
      .

    2. There shall be double valuation for all theory and practical papers, Papers, the average of the marks awarded by the internal and external examiners shall be taken as the final award. 
      .

    3. In case of 20% or more deviation in the marks awarded by the internal and the external valuer, the script shall be referred to the third valuer and the average of the nearest two shall be considered for the award of marks.
      .

  13. CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES

    1. The minimum for a pass in each paper shall be 40%. (Exam. Proper and Internal Assessment put together) and 50% in aggregate of all the semesters put together. There shall be no separate minima either for exam proper or for internal assessment
      .

    2. Successful candidates in each semester shall be classified as follows
      Distinction: 75 % and above
      First class: those who obtained 60% and above.
      Second class: those who have obtained 50% and more.

  14. CERTIFICATES AND THE DIPLOMA
    The Statement of Marks and the Diploma Certificate will be issued by Rai Foundation, as Darshan College is an academic centre of the Rai Foundaion.

  16. PROVISION FOR THE REPEATERS

    1. A candidate is allowed to carry all the previous unclear papers to the subsequent semester.
      .

    2. Candidates who have failed/remained absent or opt to improve in any one or more papers are called as repeaters. They shall appear for the immediate consecutive examinations
      .

    3. The candidate shall take the examination as per the syllabus and the scheme of examination in force during the subsequent appearances.
      .

  17. FEE STRUCTURE

    1. Academic Fee Rs. 15 000 = 00 per semester
      Rs. 30 000 =00 for the entire course

    2. Board and Lodge Rs. 15 000/- per semester 
      Rs. 30 000/- for the entire course

      (Board and lodge will be provided only to those who apply for it) . The DD and the Cheques should be drawn in facour of “DARSHAN COLLEGE” payable in Bangalore. Payment has to be done at the college office on the day of commencement of the course.

  18. ARRIVAL
    The Course begins on August 1, 2006. The Interviews commence at 9.00 a.m on the same day, followed by the entrance examination (if needed only). The students should bring along with them the ORIGINAL certificate of the Qualifying examination (namely, the Graduation in any subject). And four stamp size photographs. 

    .

  19. SPECIAL GUIDELINES
    Special Guidelines will be provided for those who live in the College hostel. They are to be strictly adhered to by every one, so that there prevails a cordial atmosphere among the hostelites.

  20. MISCELLANEOUS
    Any other issue not envisaged above, should be resolved by the Director in consultation with the appropriate bodies of the Academic Committee, which shall be final and binding.
